10 Under the regulations of the International Air Transport Association, certain items are classified as dangerous cargo and, if accepted for transport by air, must be specially packed and labeled. They are then stored in a separate hold apart from the general cargo. These items include any objects or substances that might be inflammable (liquid or solid), corrosive, explosive, poisonous, or radioactive, such as:
- Test kits, containing solutions of insecticides in ethanol, methanol or acetone (inflammable liquid);
- Chemicals such as stains (inflammable), acids (corrosive), xylene (inflammable), cyanogen bromide (poisonous), etc.;
- Some insecticides (poisonous);
- Virus cultures and/or biological material which could present a danger if their container is opened in error or broken accidentally during transportation;
- Correcting fluid (inflammable).
20 Such items may be sent only by rail, sea or, within the limits indicated above, as air freight; they cannot in any circumstances be dispatched by WHO pouch nor carried in the personal baggage of staff members travelling by air (see related content: Disaptch of Dangerous Cargo).
