Purpose

10  The purpose of the Funeral Allowance is to provide financial support based on local practice and in accordance with the local conditions of employment at the staff member’s duty station upon the death of a recognized dependent and/or immediate family member (spouse, child, parent, sibling) as indicated in the local salary scale.

Eligibility

20  At certain duty stations, locally-recruited General Service staff members and National Professional Officers holding a continuing, a fixed-term or temporary appointment under Staff Rule 420.4 with a minimum contract duration or combination of temporary appointments of three months or more, may claim a Funeral Allowance through GSM Staff Member self-service.

30  The local salary scale at the duty station indicates where such allowance is payable, the amount due and for which family members it is applicable.

40  The staff member should provide a certified true copy of the Death Certificate at the time of making the request for the Funeral Allowance, or at the latest within 60 days of making the request. Non-submission of the death certificate will result in a recovery of the funeral allowance paid.

50  The provisions under the policies and procedures on funeral allowance are not applicable to staff members on temporary appointments.
