10   It is the author’s responsibility to obtain written permission for reproducing or adapting any third-party materials (e.g. tables, figures, illustrations and substantial portions of text) in a publication. A specimen letter for requesting permission is available on the WHO headquarters intranet and on the intranet sites of regional offices. All permissions should be archived at the executive clearance stage (see section VIII.1.4, paragraphs 60 to 90).The materials should be appropriately cited and a bibliographical reference included in the reference list (see section VIII.7.2).

20   When requesting permission to use third-party materials in a WHO publication, WHO staff should state that the work will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 intergovernmental (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO) licence (see section VIII.6.10). This should also be specified in the permission from the copyright holder.

30  When requesting permission to use third-party materials in an external journal article or book chapter, WHO staff should state that the work will be available under the CC BY 3.0 IGO or CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO licence (see section VIII.6.10). This should also be specified in the permission from the copyright holder.

40  If data collected from WHO regional or country offices or Member States are to be used in a publication, written permission should be obtained from the office or Member State concerned before publication. The data sources should also be properly accredited (see section VIII.7.2).
