10 During the time of their service with WHO, staff members are requested to undergo medical examinations at intervals, the period between which varies according to their age and the living conditions and climate of the place in which they are working. The frequency of examination is normally as follows, unless otherwise determined in certain cases by the Regional Staff Physician (RSP) (e.g. type of duty, personal risk factors, etc) in agreement with Director, Staff Health and Wellbeing (SHW) at headquarters.
20 For staff under forty years of age:
i. assigned at headquarters, in Europe, North America, and other areas as determined by the Director, SHW, every five years;
ii. assigned elsewhere, every three years.
30 For staff of forty and up to fifty-five years of age, every two years regardless of their duty station.
40 For staff of fifty-five years of age and over, every year regardless of their duty station.
50 For staff working in a duty station where conditions are known to be of risk to health, as frequently as regional directors may decide, if necessary after consultation with the Director, SHW headquarters and RSPs.
60 Periodic examinations are normally similar to the pre-appointment examination, the results being recorded by the staff physician on form SHW 16. Exceptions may however be made if agreed to beforehand by the Director, SHW and by the Director, HRT. Costs related to periodic medical examinations are reimbursed to the staff member if costs are incurred – see III.15.8.
