​​10    In accordance with Staff Rule 1085, a staff member may be required to undergo a medical examination by a physician designated by the Staff Physician or the Regional Staff Physician (RSP) as appropriate prior to the scheduled date of separation. 

20    The objective of the medical examination conducted in accordance with Staff Rule 1085 is to obtain a detailed medical record of the state of health of the departing staff member, both in the staff member's interest and in the interest of the Organization.  The Staff Physician or the RSP as appropriate takes into account not only the staff member's complete medical record during their service with WHO, but also the assignments they have most recently fulfilled for the Organization. 

30.1    A medical examination prior to separation is required when deemed to be warranted by the Staff Physician or the RSP as appropriate.

30.2    A medical examination is normally required if the staff member concerned in the twelve months preceding the scheduled date of separation:

(i) was absent due to repeated or extended sick leave or was on Sick Leave under Insurance Cover; or
(ii) has had an illness or an accident that has been claimed and/or has been determined by the Organization to be service incurred under Staff Rule 730 established in the twelve months preceding the date of separation.

40    If a medical examination has taken place not longer than three months prior to the scheduled date of separation or if a report about the staff member's health not longer than three months prior to the scheduled date of separation is available to the Staff Physician or the RSP as appropriate, they may base their recommendation on such examination or such report and the staff member will be so notified.  

50     A staff member may request a medical examination to be performed prior to their separation.  Such request shall normally be granted unless the staff member was examined less than twelve months preceding the scheduled date of separation.  Such a request must be received by the Staff Physician or RSP as appropriate not less than one month prior to the scheduled date of separation.

60    The results of the medical examination will be recorded by the Staff Physician or by the RSP as appropriate and retained in the staff member's medical record.

70    With the exception of retirement under Staff Rule 1020.1 and termination for reasons for health under Staff Rule 1030, if the Staff Physician or the RSP as appropriate determines that the staff member is incapable of performing their duties at the scheduled date of separation, the Staff Physician informs the Director, HRT for Headquarters staff/RSP for regional and country office staff informs DAF of the duration of the incapacity and to undertake the appropriate review and administrative action in relation to the staff member's separation. 

80    In accordance with Staff Rule 1085, a temporary staff member may be required to undergo a medical examination by a physician designated by the Staff Physician or the Regional Staff Physician (RSP) as appropriate prior to the scheduled date of separation. 

90     A temporary staff member may request a medical examination to be performed prior to his/her separation.  Such a request must be received by the Staff Physician or RSP as appropriate not less than one month prior to the scheduled date of separation.

100    The results of the medical examination will be recorded by the Staff Physician or the RSP as appropriate and retained in the temporary staff member's medical record. Refer also to III.6.9 Certified sick leave for temporary staff.
