10    A staff member in the general service or national professional officer category may be granted one additional pensionable step for long service, provided that the staff member has completed at least twenty years of fully satisfactory service and five years of service at the top regular step of the current grade. Satisfactory service with other United Nations organizations shall be included, if credited under Staff Rule 480.1.4.

20    The staff member is granted the UN long service step automatically in the on-line system upon completion of the required period of satisfactory service excluding periods of special leave without pay (SLWOP) and special leave under insurance cover (SLIC) of 30 days or more.  The staff member will receive a notification of the granting of the UN long service step. 

WHO long service recognition

30    Effective 1 January 2019, upon completing 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 35 years of service with the Organization, professional, national professional and general service staff members shall be recognized for the length of their employment ​by receiving a Certificate for Service. These certificates are printed in English or in French. In the event that the staff member was subject to disciplinary action in the previous two (2) years of their completion of service, the recognition will be delayed by two (2) years from the date of the disciplinary decision.

40    For staff at Headquarters, the certificates will be signed by the Director-General or his or her delegate. For regional staff, the certificates will be signed by the Regional Director or his or her delegate.

50    Staff members shall also receive one day of compensatory leave upon reaching each service milestone.

These provisions are not applicable to staff members holding temporary appointments as defined in Staff Rule 420.4 or to those appointed under Staff Rules 1320.
